The roaring twenties. The prohibition era. The jazz age. This year, our Christmas Party theme is 1920’s Great Gatsby.

The 1920’s, also known as the roaring twenties, was a time where the nation was strong; business was booming and everyone was celebrating the end of a long and brutal war (World War 1). Prohibition, or the outlawing of alcohol, passed during the 20’s which lead to an explosion of illegal clubs, known as speakeasies, and people became much more social. The party scene was booming and Gangsters made enormous amounts of money from supplying illegal liquor; increasing the popularity of cocktails!

Fashion entered the modern era. Women embraced their change in society and began to cut their hair, wear make-up and abandoned the more restricting fashions of previous years. The 20’s is well known for the glamorous flapper-style;  beautiful dresses, dropped waists, fringes, sequins and a loose-fitting silhouette. The jazz age was all about luxury and abundance, so it was pearls and jewels galore! Men also began to abandon the highly formal attire in favour of short jackets with two or three buttons rather than jackets with long tailcoats.

To compliment the glitzy parties and rebellious culture, came the rise of Jazz music and fast paced dancing; The Jazz Age. It became the prominent style of music during the 20’s, started by African Americans. Jazz music swept across the nation and carried the spirits of a new and prosperous decade with it.
